Divorce Pre-Mediation Coaching

No one should ever Mediate a Divorce Settlement without first being skillfully prepared

This coaching session is designed for either one or both parties to prepare them for their upcoming divorce mediation. The sessions are individually held and are confidential. Each party's individual sessions are two hours of interactive, case specific exploration of how the divorce mediation process works. Our work will prepare you to be able to mediate your divorce issues by creating realistic expectations, identifying your interests, understanding how you will emotionally respond, what to expect about the mediator you have chosen, and giving you the basic tools to actualize a successful mediation. We don't want you to be an expert on mediation, but rather an expert on how to use your mediation effectively.

What you will accomplish

Along with learning how to effectively utilize the mediation process to obtain the best results for you, a few of the things you will accomplish are:

  • Understanding the basics of divorce mediation.
  • Learning how to effectively utilize your attorney's skills.
  • Identify your interests and your spouses interests.
  • Comprehend how your family dynamics has influenced the conflict.
  • How to use the mediator to advance your goals.
  • Appreciate power imbalances and how to manage them productively.
  • Learn how and when to make decisions that advance you goals.
  • Diagnose the dynamics of communication between you and your spouse.
  • How to more effectively participate in constructive conflict conversations.
  • Construct a written mediation plan of needs and interests.
  • Analyze your communication style and unproductive dynamics.

4 Skills you will learn

Managed emotions: Learning this skill can help you stay calm when so-and-so is talking in the mediation. It will help you appear reasonable and focused on solutions.
Flexible thinking: Can help resolve your dispute in a way that works for you.
Moderate behavior: Realizing how to communicate so you don't make the other person defensive can be really helpful, since most people don't think about that when upset.
Check yourself: This helps you remember to use the skills during the mediation process.
